Oil on canvas paintings are the core of Nina Stoupina’s art, but drawing, short films and objects allow her to deepen and reveal a larger subject.
In an often divided world, she strongly believes art is a powerful tool to build bridges and strengthen connections.
When you see works of Nina Stoupina, the first sense you feel is 'home' or absence of it, as ‘displaced’ person for a long time, she found her own language of symbols and layers. Through physical experience you can feel in her works the fragile side of a woman artist, and at the same time her strong and wandering soul, That is why she expresses by creating layers of stories she keeps in her memory mixed with todays stories.
Born and raised in Russia. Influenced by Russian avantgarde heritage and many travels through every part of the Russian Federation and many other countries Nina took a lot of inspiration from this travels through Asia. There she was introduced to Asian traditional techniques and from that period she started using silk, paper, wax and liquid color. Experimenting with mixed media and formats, just makes her unique and constantly develops her signature.
In the beginning her works were mostly monochrome, which was her visual identity. With photographs and writings she created layers giving a more personal, intimate note. In later works, Nina started to use a more figurative style, but the avantgarde note remained visible. In recent years more color came into her works: the red/orange tones derives from energy she has in herself. Besides her paintings and drawings, she makes 3-dimensional installations in different media, always remaining faithful to her own personal symbols.
Since 1995 Nina lives and works in Ghent, Belgium. Apart from the numerous exhibitions national and international, she organized in her Project space own exhibitions, took part in different art projects and participated in art colonies or art residencies.
